Rongotai College: Rongotai

Rongotai College or 'RC' as it affectionately known has been a 'powerhouse' of Wellington Schools rugby since it's opening in 1928. For almost, if not all, of the college's 85 years RC has been in the top 4 of Wellington Colleges. Having played in the WRFU 'u19 open grade' until it came under the College Sport umbrella some 25 years ago winning 4 Championships

The 1950's were an era for great progress when it entered the WRFU u19 competition and in 1959 beat both Wellington College and St Pats Silverstream for the first time

In the seventies the First XV at Rongotai College proved themselves to be a Wellington powerhouse. Building on the success of the sixties, Rongotai in the seventies achieved a record number of wins in a season, their first victory in the Wellington Under 19 Championship and a record interschool victory against Nelson College.

The 80's and 90's were good periods for the school under the excellent coaching of Chris Wells (now Wellington College) and the 2 x Phil Jones (Taffy and Jonesy) which saw them make a number of appearances in the New Zealand top 4 competition.

The late 1990's and early 2000's were a rewarding time for RC as it started to produce players of real quality. From that era came the likes of World Cup winning All Black Ma'a Nonu, Super Rugby player and NZ 7's representative Roy Kinikinilau, Current Super Rugby representatives, Mark Reddish, Motu Matu'u and ITM Cup players Manu Leiataua (North Harbour) and Whetu Henry (Wellington).

In 2003 Rongotai won the Wellington College Sport Premier 1 title with a last minute victory over arch rivals Wellington College after beating them earlier in the 'traditional fixture'. The coach of that team, Dave Meaclem has returned to his ‘old school’ in charge of the programme.?

The late 2000's under the direction of Phil (Jonesy) Jones and Justin Gray saw the emergence of the Savea brothers, Julian and Ardie. Julian became the schools 8th All Black in 2012 and much of the teams workload was carried by these two players.

Rongotai College consistently fields 7 teams 1st XV, 2nd XV, 3rd XV, U15, U14, U65kg & U55kg from a school of 650 pupils.
